Electricity Information and Facts
In the UK, Electricity for domestic and commercial consumers is produced in a number of different ways, including coal and gas fired power stations, straw fired power stations, nuclear power stations, hydro-electric power stations, and wind farms.
In the search for electrity sources which support one planet living, we can expect to see wave and tidal electicity generation, and even electricty generated from the heat of decomposing household waste.
All these sources rely on heat energy or kentictic being converted to electrical energy by means of huge turbines. The turbine operation involves the rotation of a huge magnet in relation to a huge coil of copper wire. It's the same principal as a bicycle dynamo, but on a much larger scale.
There are several answers to the question "Who Invented Electricity ?" ; Benjamin Franklin's famous kite experiment proved the link between lightning and electricity, which enabled Franklin to invent the lightning rod, which is installed in almost every tall building in the world today. Alessandro Volta constructed the voltaic pile, later known as the electric battery, the first device to produce a steady electric current. In 1600, long before Volta and Franklin, William Gilbert coined the term "electric", from the Greek "elektron", to identify the force that certain substances exert when rubbed against each other. The ancient Greeks had discovered that by rubbing fur on amber, this caused an attraction between the two.
